Tiki Torches- Just What Your Patio or Garden Needs

Have you ever considered buying several tiki torches to spruce up your garden or patio?  Many homeowners have been finding that by adding a couple of these specialty items to their yard the overall feel is dramatically improved.

But, what exactly are tiki torches exactly?

Originally brought to the US from Polynesia, these items are basically a “burning light” on a stick.  Historically it has been a long and slender bamboo stick with some sort of chamber or canister at the top of it.  This chamber holds fuel, either some form of lighter fluid or citronella oil.  Inside the fuel is a wick that sticks out of the torch.  Once the doused wick is lit it lights up the whole area around it.

While this form of lighting has been a mainstay in places like Tahiti and Hawaii for hundreds of years tiki torches have only began to gain popularity in the United States over the last ten.

Just the other day I went into Home Depot to look for some bamboo torches and one of the employees proceeded to inform me they were out.  His particular store was cleaned out a week ago.  I went another home improvement store.  An employee there told me that shipments of tiki torches rarely last a week in his store, particularly during the summer.  People have found out who popular these things are and buy as many as they can for parties, gatherings, or to add to their property.

Its amazing how this particular outdoor torch lighting can have such a basic design and yet be so relaxing.  Is it the smell of citronella oil burning or is it the nostalgia of thinking about the last time you were in the tropics?

Whatever the reason tiki torches have show themselves to be a huge hit.  Definitely something any homeowner, especially a social one, should look into.  They are not that expensive and IF you can find them they are not more than $5 a piece in addition to the torch fuel you must buy for them.  A cheap investment, nonetheless, and one that should firmly warrant your consideration.
